Eagle Bluff Conservation Day 1

Image
We could not wait to go hiking this past weekend. We planned for a Saturday morning exploring at  Eagle Bluffs , but ended up spending hours there on Saturday, Sunday, AND, Monday. We could not get enough of the beautiful landscape and incredible trails. So the first parking lot brought us right to this - the Missouri River right on the crest of flood stage. We had gotten flood alerts all morning on our phones because it was just days away from going over the levees. On this day, however, it still had a few feet to go so the trails were still open.  We talked to a lady who was a regular on the trails here and she pointed out the 2 hiking trails adjacent to this parking lot and gave us directions to the trail on the other end of the conservation area as well. She also told us about the eagle nests in the area and how you could see them from the road and might even be able to see baby eagles still in the nest. We searched and searched for the next 3 days for thos...

Turkey Creek Hike

Image
Today I bring you a hiking post from back in March. Boy were we itching to get out of the house this spring once the temperature peaked above 40 degrees. We could not get enough. I've written tons about hiking at  Three Creeks , but on this particular venture, we hiked at a new area of Three Creeks called Turkey Creek (one of the "Three Creeks"). Soon, I will be reviewing a fantastic new hiking app I found that tracks everything you need to know about a hiking location. I will be using it in the future to add interesting details to hiking posts here on the blog, but for now, you'll just have to take my word for it. I underestimate spring every single year. I always think it's summer I'm waiting for, but these 60 degree days seem like the perfect remedy for our cabin fever. Even if it's cold and damp, it's still better to be outdoors than not. I like how big of a difference there is in the vegetation at the different trails we hike. ...

Gans Creek Shooting Star Trailhead

We hit another amazing trail last weekend and hiked for more than three miles through a beautiful terrain. Jeremy's Fit Bit said we had climbed more than "30 floors" when it was all said and done. It was probably the most difficult trail we've done with the boys, including the trail at Three Creeks  where you climb a steep incline at the base of the river to get back to the trail. I first wrote about Gans Creek  a few weeks ago when we hiked our first hike  of the season. We couldn't resist the crisp air and melting snow, but didn't hike for long that day. While we were there, we picked up a brochure and looked at the extensive Gans Creek trail system that is actually connected to Rock Bridge State Park.  The entrance to this side of Gans Creek is east of the entire trail system so pretty far removed from the Rock Bridge trails. Compared to Rock Bridge, Gans Creek is much less touristy, much more rugged and way more expansive. We were worried when we pu...
